Stronger Together

The Electrical Wholesale Industry is going through changes that are affecting us all (National and Independent alike). To name a few:

•    Internet Trading - Price visibility like never before. Our customers have immediate access to global price points via their smartphones.

•    Slow down in Construction Industry - Britain’s building sector has slipped to the brink of stagnation. Activity rose at the slowest pace in 10 months, according to the latest Construction PMI report. (February 2019)

•    New Market Entrants - Bread and butter electrical products are now being sold in supermarkets and discounters. As well as other new players all looking to take market share away from the traditional electrical wholesaler.

•    Product deflation. Many lighting products that were being sold for £9.99 a few years ago are now being sold for £1.99. What's worse, the product is designed to last 10 years!

•    Brexit - While I am no expert in the pros and cons, it is clear that many companies are holding back on investment decisions while they await the outcome of the negotiations.

In reality, all the above are happening, and there is very little anyone can do to stop the tide of change.
What an Independent Wholesaler can do, however, is ensure that they are buying right, that they are working closely with the suppliers who are actively supporting the industry, and that they are shunning the suppliers who are developing other routes to market. Plus taking opportunities to network, ensuring staff are well trained and kept up to date with changes in legislation, underpinned by a strategy for recruiting, training and retaining quality staff.

Joining a buying group will give the Independent Wholesaler the buying power of an organisation many times their size. Choosing a group that is also a member of the EDA, as the IBA is, will provide you with access to an established programme of training and apprenticeships, including product knowledge training to boost your team’s confidence to cross sell and upsell. There’s also expert business support to help you with legal advice, HR, health and safety and so on.

What do we look for from a member?

Firstly, as a group run by its Members for its Members, we are looking for like-minded business leaders who are passionate about the industry and are wanting to take an active part within the group.
Secondly, the IBA looks for established electrical wholesalers who can provide a set of accounts proving a turnover of £500k or more. In return for this, you can expect a return on investment in excess of twice the membership fees (however most members receive considerably more).
